The 1920s were a period of tremendous change. Historians often refer to them as the “Roaring Twenties” or the Jazz Age. American enjoyed a great deal of prosperity at the time, and many people made their fortunes only to see them wiped out by the end of the decade. But until the party ended, the Twenties were unlike anything anyone had ever seen before. It was also a great period of change. The world saw the first commercial radio station go on the air in 1920, and in 1926 the first full-length motion picture with a soundtrack reached the public. But this era also saw rise of the gangster and one really cool outfit in the form of the gangster costume.
Not to be outdone by the Gangster, the Flappers burst onto the scene in the 1920’s. The Flappers were young women who moved counter to the established societal norms of the day by dressing provocatively, drinking and demanding to vote. Their style of dress was so unique and possessed such an edge, that even nearly a century later it still has coolness and appeal that makes for a great 20s costume. The flapper costume and gangster costumes have a cool factor that is just hard for many other costumes to touch. 20’s costumes in general have a great inventiveness and flare that will make them a fine Halloween costume year in and year out.
If you are looking for a hip costume that is edgy and lets you stand out from the crowd, consider a Twenties costume. After all, not too many costumes let you carry a machine gun with such style.
