Aya Kakeda and Nina Frenkel aren't actually sister, nor do they have mustaches, but they do have some things in common. They're both illustrators and they both share an interest in Hungarian culture. Soon after meeting they realized that they wanted to enter the Mustache Contest sponsored by the Hungarian Cultural Center in New York and needed an idea that involved two people. The result was the Mustache Sisters costume that to the girls represents friendship, creativity and fun.
